Inspiration for this ‘shop as a house’ is the beautiful moment of sun rise. At that moment white catches the most colors. So we decided to make this four stories high house white and natural.

At the entrance there is a cabinet full of clothes and a white marble desk. Furniture are made of wooden sticks, painted white standing in front of a wall with four natural oak vitrines, symmetric placed.  In the back we made a glass house, with a painted glass ceiling and hanging plants. From the glass house you will enter the changing room area, completely enclosed by old shutters. Moving up to the first second and third floor the house gets more lighter.  We tear down walls and opened old windows to let sun in.

Only the basement stayed basement; the materials used  are all derived from industrial setting: steel, dark brown and used wood.

25 years Coolcat. Enter right now and you will feel the bass go straight through your bones. Specially made speakers are ceiling high walls, floors are made of glass to give you disco fever. Led lights are traveling though the shop on the ritme of sound.  We have refreshed shops by turning them into dance and party halls. What we do is making music, a vital element to Coolcat, visible. So you have to dance!

No walls isn’t a good thing for a department store if you wand to have walls. The ‘Blob’ in Eindhoven has no walls, only windows, 4 big escalators ( too many if you ask us) and 1400m2 space.  In a very limited time frame of only 4 weeks of design and 6 weeks of production, we designed space by making walls, dressed as cabinets. Solid walls in the middle places in a curve, and transparent walls on the window sides.

Located on the busiest area of Amsterdam this small apartment has room enough for 5 beds, enough storage space, a big kitchen, a big bathroom and a great view.

On the ground floor of the formal light tower of Philips now Grand Cafe Usine is based. In the past the first light bulbs for Philips where produced in this factory, nowadays it is a monument. We are responsable for the total concept and the design of the restaurant including the naming and logo. Philips’ original caption ‘Les plus grandes usines du monde’ was used as inspiration and for the restaurant is changed into: ‘Usine le plus grand cafe du monde.’ Or, in other words, Usine is a grand cafe for everyone! The restaurant is divided in different areas, each with their own function, look and feel and furniture.

We are responsible for the brand identity of Usine and created the total graphic design language. First of all we came up with the name ‘Usine’ inspired by an orgininal Philips poster with the caption ‘Les plus grandes usines du monde’.  We designed the logo and various other graphic elements like tea labels, menus, T-shirts and business cards. The old fashioned light bulb was used as an important icon within the brand language. And because we liked it so much we designed a special ‘usine’ font.

A ‘shop in shop’ system for women fashion brand Dept, placed in de Bijenkorf Amsterdam.

A ‘shop in shop’ system to highlight clothes that are inspired by ‘industrial evolution’. Made in black steel, tube lights and a some wood.

Close your eyes and picture this: heavy industry, smoking pipes and the roaring sounds of engines. It is exactly this image we translated into an interior design concept for the Utrecht (NL) shop of fashion chain J.C. Rags. It’s the basic principle of ‘industrial evolution’, we decided to extend to the 150-m2 store.
The materials used for the interior design are all derived from an industrial setting: steel, wood, concrete. Each piece of clothing is tagged with a steel engraving, communicating information on the origin of the product on display. We carried out this concept in labeling all customized furniture with steel plates, containing unique information – like its size, e.g. (JC 86). Central in the space is a steel rail, supporting closets that are branching out on all sides.  In the rear, a varnished table – an artwork best described as an exploded view of a machine, visualizing the beauty of mechanics  – displays the brand’s latest arrivals. The roaring sound of engines conducts the industrial theme in the shop.

In a former Jaguar garage next to the A2 highway we created a plan for an 2500m2 office/showrooms for 2 brands. In the plan the 2 level high building will be split in the middle into 2 parts; left side for JC Rags and right side for Dept.

A 600m2 addition in the back of property connects the 2 parts again. In this part the separated brands will share their canteen and their ‘back office’.

An atelier is a place where creation starts. We used that as starting point for a shop. On a wooden industrial floor, partly painted white, are standing wooden blocks, steel tables, simple racks and a big round mirror, all placed in a white environment.

MAW opened a new store in Almere with a unique concept based on the principles of playing darts. The 1000 square meters of retail space host both Menatwork and Footwork spread out on a huge dartboard. When you enter the store there is a wall covered with dartboards, which all point out the maximum score of the game, bullseye! When you walk further into the store it becomes clear that also the shop interior evolves around this centre piece of the dartboard, on which colourful mannequins show the latest collection while slowly turning. Based on the black and white graphic structure of the board, the circular lay-out of the shop provides a clear overview and creates a dynamic atmosphere. The fitting rooms are situated in the back of the store and embrace the round shape being covered with ceiling hight curtains.

For this 1500-m2 Men At Work shop in Groningen (NL),we were enticed by some thrilling backstage images from the thirties and set up the shop as if it were containing a backstage area. Instead of organizing the space in a defined order, we did quite the opposite. Arbitrary positioned furniture on swiveling undercarriage is spread throughout the space. Wall units – turned round frames hung on the wall – double as a point of suspension for garment racks. For the flooring, white marber tiles clash with raw concrete. A steel staircase meanders up, its steps narrowing in size the more one ascends, untill it finally splits up in two parts. The fitting rooms, too, contain a ‘front’ (on stage) and ‘backstage’ side. Whereas the façades are constructed out of a wooden framework, inside the rooms are decorated with white plywood and velvet curtains. Old-fashioned evergreen plants are like a piece of scenery – as everything else surrounding the clothes seems to be.

In the old studio of Magic Minds Bearandbunny designed the office for Achtung! Magic Minds became famous for the blob of the internet bubble and the totally white interior, designed by Jan des Bouvrie. We decided to keep the space white and light. Achtung needed 3 tables to sit and work on. Bearandbunny designed the 3 tables. The biggest is 5x6m and can host the entire interactive team. In the main room the words Achtung! house book shelves, audio installation and flower pots. The dining table is 8 meters long and every employee has his own chair. The freestanding kitchen is made from polyester and felt.

The FOOTWORK logo, a +, is a positive sign. The ‘cross’ or ‘plus’ is embedded in all elements of the shop. It is visible as a table, as display blocks and is integrated in the fixtures and wall system.

High gloss white walls are covered with 450 oval shaped shelves. Due to their irregular placing, the shadows are different in size and form. Where the old shop used only the front part of the building, the new store is using its complete floor level, consisting out of 4 rooms. Each room has a tile floor with a different pattern. In the middle section the wall is covered with fabric and has a brown leather couch. In front of this is a hugh mirror framed in brass. Ceilings and sky lights were restored to capture the character of the old building.

Concept for a Blend mini mall in de Hofbogen, Rotterdam. Brands are placed together in an old railroad building. To mark there own space we literally design shops in a shop by giving the storefronts.

The concept for this sneakers venue was inspired by the shoemaker’s workshop in olden days. Think of an ambiance authentic, dark and warm. A place where the cobbler made shoes made by hand. A niche filled with machines, tools on wooden tables and the pungent smell of leather. The shop’s logo, a +, is a positive sign. The ‘cross’ or ‘plus’ is embedded in all elements of the shop. It is visible as a table, as display blocks and is integrated in the fixtures and wall system. Consciously placed mirrors are containing different functions: low mirrors reflect the shoes one is wearing whereas enlarged shaving mirrors focus on a single pair of shoes. The large wall mirrors surface even more shoes.

Sweet sixteen. For us, it was an age coloured by high school adventures. Think PE, wall bars and gymnastic apparatus. Building tree houses. Greenhouses (John grew up in Deventer). Dutch painter Piet Mondriaan, infamous for his bold figures and his use of primary colours. All these childhood remnants come together in the Men At Work store in Antwerp (BE).
As shops tend to get a bit boring once you’ve scoped out the space, we tried to add as much alternating elements to keep customers intriguid, and returning. Instead of a well-balanced variety of interior elements, the fashion shop is decked with everything from a buck (the counter), wall bars (display material), bars, squares and circles in yellow, red and blue (fitting rooms) to a greenhouse area (showcasing the shop’s limited collections; the tag of a tee shirt or tank top planted in a flowerpot). The fashion chain’s same customized furniture is coated white to emphasize the high school appeal and allow for some unity among the scattered objects.

For the interior concept of the Amsterdam branch of Finnish glassware virtuosi Iittala, we took the company’s underlying design philosophy of mix-and-match as a keynote. The store layout shows consumers numerous options to easily choose and combine pieces from the versatile collection. Various elements used in the store are referring to the brand and its background. The ‘northern light’, or aurora borealis, in the rear of the shop oozes the full spectrum of colors of Iittala’s glassware, while illuminated tables provide a range of different settings. The partinioned floor mimics the one in the original glass factory and the shingles on the wall are normally used for exterior walls of houses. The shopfront is designed to have maximum amount of see-through; the steel construction adorning the windows refers to the infamous designer Alvar Aalto’s factory design.

Simple apartment for a single man. Unpolished rough wooden floor and a rough stone kitchen floor and walls.

“How can we change the way we present our carpets and qualities?” was asking Enia Carpets. “Our samples of carpets are hide away in books and storages.”

We saw the samples as a small version of  big carpets. So we designed big brackets to emphasis the small sample size carpets. The benefit of this design is that the samples can not easily hide on a shelve.

We even thought of inspiration lunch boxes to take away. Unfortunately the carpet business wants to stick with booth feet on the ground; it was too progressive.

For the Maastricht Men At Work store, we started off by musing on what makes a shop stand out in the retail jungle. As nearly any shop-window is kitted out with the ubiquitos mannequins show, why not take advantage of this and do something completely different?
Dubbed by locals as ‘the shop with the loudspeakers’, the shop-window is left strikingly open, allowing passers-by to have a peek at the wall-sized loudspeakers ensemble inside. Roughly 600 speakers, gathered from various shops specialized in recycled goods; adorn one of the two long entrance walls. To make optimal use of the façade, a conveyor belt showcasing single shoes is running along the base of the floor-to-ceiling shop-window. The lengthy stairs enable visitors to sink into the shop at a slow pace, simultaneously absorbing them into the retail environment. This constant intermingling of randomly positioned tailor’s dummies and real people gives the store a thrilling extra catch.

When we first saw the 500-m2 , former carpet centre in the historic centre of Brueges (BE) we just fell in love with the stale character of the rather run-down place and proposed to retain the soul of the space. Almost all existing elements were preserved – yet used in a new, and at times exaggerated way. Radiators, are given a second life as display fittings. Clamped lamps serve as miniature displays for small goods. Peculiar old-fashioned armchairs with velvet upholstering are scattered throughout the shop. The sliding walls – typical for local party centres – we found in the storage room, are utilized as doors for the fitting rooms. The cashpoint is decked with another discovery we made: paving tiles, which we also used to construct the floor. Together with the original lathed ceiling and striplighting, and plenty of succulents, the shop oozes gezellig (enjoyable) through every vein. A special addition is the presence of two canary cockbirds, who felt such at ease in the shop they gave birth to several young ones six weeks after the store had opened its doors.

The first Men At Work concept store is located in an old library basement. The shop design was inspired by the flea market in New York, which becomes evident as an accumulation of different zones – intentionally failing a clear routing. The concrete floor, as well as ceiling, walls and columns are left untouched, only to be embellished by graffiti artists. The entrance is a narrow 1.2-meter wide (whereas it could be 6 meter). The jeans shelves, constructed out of coated soft foam, mimic enlarged toys. The ceiling-high tennis net is enclosing the lab for new arrivals. The fitting rooms are arranged in a line-up – because of the huge see-through mirror, plus it makes for an excellent way to sell jeans. When the shop opened its doors in March, it welcomed 11,000 visitors in just two days.

Identity and strategic presentation for introducing Tailor made ‘H’ and Hilfiger Jeans in the UK.

Invasion of Minifigures. Lego minifigure is excisting 25 years. For this anniversary  we came up with ideas to let people know that Minifiures have infiltrated in our lives and we didn’t know it. Suddenly small signs pop up in the city. Signs that look like faces, a billboard showing a girl with yellow dripple on her face. Tags on wall and cars giving us the secret code…

The assignment of the Men At Work store coincided with our return from a trip to Tokyo and the phenomenon of Pet Architecture (i.e. tiny houses leaning against existing architecture). Those images still vividly captured in our minds, we adopted the ‘Pet format’ to the Amsterdam-based store.
Located in one of the main shopping streets, the shop’s interior turned into somewhat of a miniature house, yet we retained the existing layout. Instead, interior elements added to the spacial structure allow for a rather fairy-like environment. One enters the shop through the fitting rooms. A wooden structure wraps around the entires staircase, opening up to the cash desk in the top. Another staircase, positioned below a pallet showcasing jeans, gives the illusion of reaching to a secret space – but actually just comes to a dead end. Scattered around the store are more hideouts, waiting to be discovered by curious browsers.

The snow performance clothing company Protest was asking us to design the head office. The interior is a eclectic mix of a brand pattern; the Protest logo is defining the ceiling structure and  seasonal graphics are place against the wall.

Table puzzle made in black high gloss wood for ‘Black collection’.

For the royal wedding of Maxima and Willem Alexander, museum ‘Het Kruithuis’ (known for its jewelery collection) invited 25 designers to design the Tiara for Maxima. The jury selected 10 designs that would be presented at the actually wedding and would go on a world wide exhibition tour.

This selected design is made out of silver lace. The form comes from traditional dutch clothes. The symbols used in the lace work are a mixture of virility and the Dutch kingdom.

EGO is an exploration of gaming. What would be the next gaming place. What could you do there and how can you play against your friends?

Droog design was asked by Levi’s Red to create a signal in shops showing clients that Levis Red Tab is being sold there.

This model of Levi’s, instead of having a front and a back side, was 3 dimentionaly designed. To emphasise the twisted seams the jeans is air sealed in a foil bag.

An invitation of Lego;

“Come play with me.”Playing keeps us young, it is joyful and connects people. Lego was aksing us what we would do as Lego to invite people to play more, without making obvious that Lego is connected. The logo is a mark, a stamp on products and builings to see them as playing objects.

Are you a bear or a bunny? The world, is made up of two types of people: bears and bunnie. At least, that’s the firm belief of John Maatman and Carlijn Kriekaard of ‘The Office of Bearandbunny’, the design company based in Amsterdam. “Bears will always look after you. They’re much more interested in you than in themselves. They just want you to be happy, like they are.” says Kriekaard. “Bunnies, on the other hand, are a different breed” says Maatman. “They’re always running around. They don’t want to miss anything. They always think someone else is having a better time. But they have so much fun.” However, this is the reason why a bunny needs a bear to come home to… So does a bear ever need another bear? “Well, sometimes bears get fed up with having to take all the responsibility. Having another bear around the house takes some of the stress away.” As for bunny-pairing? “That happens too. But it’s a fast-burn relationship.” Bunnies get together when they haven’t found their bear yet.

The Francoise Vatel School and Kunst & Bedrijf commisioned us to create an identity for the new cooking school in The Hague. We awarded the school with three stars (the most Michelin stars given to a restaurant in The Netherlands was two stars). The communication for the school was based on this. The stars in the logo are three eclectic stars, the two halls have three star tracks, symbolised by three light rings.

Stand designed as a product rather than architecture. Every element was specially designed, including the bags. The shape is made of aluminum elements and is adjustable in size. It was made for an international fair in San Fransisco to get more brand awareness amongst well known computer software brands.

Droog Design asked us to design summer packaging for l’Eau d’Issey man and woman perfume.Several concepts were presented but one in particulary was interesting; the water bottle. The idea behind this was that l’Eau d’Issey was the first perfume made out of water instead of alcohol. So the packaging was the same material as the perfume. Because it was for summer time the packaging would keep the bottle cool and you could even drink it.

Stroom, a centre for art and cultural events for the city of the Hague, asked twelve artists to design twelve bicycle houses, to be located throughout the Hague. The designs had to be presented in scale models.

Stroom asked to make the exhibition in the city hall of the Hague about this bicycle houses project, to inform the public and get them enthusiastic.
12 building signs were made for each location, only not 1:1 but also in model size. The pictures were made of this on the spot. These pictures were enlarged and mounted on a real size building sign, that was also holding the model of the specific bicycle house. These were put into the city hall.
